Embark on the journey of a lifetime exploring the breathtaking wilderness of the Canadian Rocky Mountains on horseback. You will ride through crystal clear creeks and over thrilling mountain passes discovering the beauty of Alberta’s most remote backcountry.
This is one of the last sizeable tracts of mountain wilderness in Alberta that has been spared from highway and commercial development. Access is limited to horseback, hiking or helicopter only. It is home to many species of wildlife which often present themselves for exciting photograpic opportunities
You will be riding the challenging mountain terrain with a well trained, seasoned mountain horse chosen specifically for you. The trails are beautiful but ambitious. Although beginner riders can have a really rewarding trip, riding experience is highly recommended to get the most from your horseback adventure.

You’ll be many miles from the nearest roads. With no motorized access allowed and trails too rugged for all but the hardiest of hikers, you’ll be exploring valleys that very few other people have ever visited.
Your home on the trail features a roomy, weatherproof, canvas wall tent outfitted with cots and mats for a good night’s sleep. .You will drift off to sleep to the sounds of a nearby creek or happy horses grazing nearby. Bring only your personal gear. Everything else is provided for a comfortable camping experience.
After a long day on the trail, it is a special treat to relax around the crackling campfire reliving the day’s journey. Friendships and family bounds flourish in the glow of the embers.

A pack trip with McKenzie’s Trails West is a unique way to experience the Canadian wilderness. We guide
adventurers many km from the nearest road into wilderness areas accessible only by horse, foot, or helicopter.
The experience is a rustic return to traditional roots, travelling much the same way explorers did in the early days
of the Canadian West.
We move both supplies and riders by horse via long established horse trails. We operate without access to electricity, cell
phone service or running water. Meals are prepared by a skilled backcountry cook with a small tin wood burning
camp stove and served out of a common cook tent. Guests stay warm and comfortable in canvas wall tents
outfitted with cots and heater stoves. Camp facilities include small bag showers and shared outhouses.
Your guides are very experienced with horses, trails, wildlife, and all things backcountry. Their first priority is your
safety. Their passion for the way of life and their many trail adventures provides colorful entertainment around
an evening campfire.
The scenery is among the best in the world. Towering mountains, pure crisp streams, subalpine lakes and high
mountain passes provide much awe and inspiration. We share the area with plenty of native wildlife and sightings
are common.
Groups are typically small, ranging in size from 6-10 guests.
We spend many long hours in the saddle as we navigate creek crossings, rugged terrain, and steep mountainsides.
There are some sections along steep trails where dismounting and leading your horse is required. Guests must be physically fit, and free of any limiting physical conditions.
People best suited for a pack trip are adventurous, active, and enjoy rustic experiences. The minimum age is 14 years old. Although experience with horses is an asset, it is not absolutely necessary. Complete beginners will likely experience some muscle or joint stiffness. It is usually taken care of with over-the- counter pain relievers. Ride regularly before your trip to minimize discomfort.
Our trips, excluding the 2 day trip, include optional pick up and drop off at Calgary International Airport
and shuttle to and from Rocky Mountain House to our base camp. Guests are responsible for hotel rooms in Rocky
Mountain House , however we can help with those arrangements if need be.
Trips commence approximately 8:30am on the first day and return 5pm on the last day. Riding varies from 3 – 8
hours/day.
Bookings are taken up to 2 years ahead with guaranteed pricing. Talk to our booking specialist to determine what trip is best for you. Once you decide to book a trip, you will be sent an
information package that includes an invoice, a list of things to bring, a guest profile form and a map of our
